LNL: EXCITING NUCLEI: HIDDEN SYMMETRIES, STELLAR ARCHAEOLOGY, CLIMATE CHANGE AND OTHER PARAPHERNALIA

Giacomo De Angelis will give a popular presentation of the research problems of modern nuclear physics and some of its applications. Nuclear physics stands at the dawn of a new era of research, thanks to the use of radioactive ion beams produced at just a few centres around the world, including the SPES project at LNL. The use of these beams in experiments will make it possible to learn about the structure and properties of exotic nuclides, far from the stability path, and will also provide new information about the nuclear reactions leading to the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements occurring in exploding stars. On the other hand, the use of radionuclides proposed by the ClimOcean research project will help monitor marine ecosystems in the face of rapid environmental change.
