LNL: INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS OF THIN FILMS
LABORATORI NAZIONALI DI LEGNARO
Francesco TERENZIANI (Thin Film Equipments) With the recent emphasis, all around the world, on renewable and energy efficiency technologies, solar energy is being seriously considered for widespread implementation. Since the 1970s, there have been a number of breakthroughs in photovoltaic technology to make electricity generation from light more feasible and economical. Today, many companies are now developing and introducing technologies to harness power from the sun. The number of different technologies and configurations is increasing rapidly. It is becoming quite difficult to keep track of the all developments. The seminar will provide participants with an overview of the photovoltaic technologies and manufacturing methods, and they will be able to understand the properties of a variety of photovoltaic cells. The seminar will identify the major issues associated with cell efficiencies and will also identify the major tradeoffs associated with each technology and efficiencies. The seminar will cover these major topic areas: 1. Characteristics of Solar Radiation 2. Semiconductor Material Properties. This will help explain the efficiency and losses that occur 3. Efficiency and Losses 4. Silicon Solar Cell Fabrication 5. Manufacturing and advanced manufacturing processes 6. A specific attention will be on the followings technologies: photovoltaic solar cells on silicon wafers; thin film photovoltaic solar cells on glass; concentrated thermal solar on stainless steel pipes.
