LNL: DEREK LOWENSTEIN, BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY ACCELERATOR-BASED FACILITIES FOR NUCLEAR PHYSICS, PARTICLE PHYSICS AND RADIOBIOLOGY PROGRAMS
LABORATORI NAZIONALI DI LEGNARO
The seminar will present an overview of the accelerator-based facilities that support the nuclear physics, particle physics and radiobiology programs at Brookhaven National Laboratory. It will focus on the complex of machines that include the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) and Booster. RHIC is an ion-ion collider that supplies colliding beams ranging from protons (polarized protons) to gold in both symmetric and anti-symmetric configurations in the energy range from 20-100 GeV / nucleon for gold ions and up to 250 GeV for polarized proton collisions. The present performance and physics results and future plans for RHICII and eRHIC and a new ion injector based on an EBIS will be presented. The AGS is the world's highest intensity source of high energy protons for fixed target experiments. The future Rare Symmetry Violating Processes (RSVP) experiments will be discussed. Construction of these experiments is expected to commence in 2005. The latest results from the rare kaon decay and muon g-2 experiments and a new long baseline neutrino experiment will be presented. The Booster supplies ion and proton beams to the recently inaugurated NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL). NSRL supports the NASA humans-in-space program and international cooperation with groups from Italy and several other countries. Experiments are conducted to study the radiobiological effects and mitigation effects on biological systems, as well as radiation shielding, nuclear physics and electronic upset studies.
