LNL: RUGGERO VAGLIO, STM: SCANNING TUNNELLING MICROSCOPY
LABORATORI NAZIONALI DI LEGNARO
Current activities are focused on the study of structural and transport properties in non-conventional intermetallic superconductors and high temperature superconductors especially in thin film form. Structural properties are studied by means of diffractometric techniques, SPM techniques and synchrotron-light techniques, while transport properties include different techniques and measurements at microwave frequencies . In particular different studies are presently performed on the 40K MgB2 compound. Attention is focused on penetration depth and microwave properties, in order to clarify the ‘nature’ of the superconducting state, as well as on planar tunnel spectroscopy and STM spectroscopy. Studies on thin films of the compound Re(NdBa)2Cu3O7 with Re=Y,Nd are also currently carried out . In collaboration with the Argonne National Laboratory STM technique are employed to measure tunnel-effect spectroscopy on these compounds. The results are analyzed in terms of theoretical models for scattering by impurities in the context of the d-wave model. Research work on microwave applications of high Tc superconductors in the field of telecommunications is also performed. New configurations of dual mode filters are currently designed, constructed and tested, and work is in progress on the study, design, and construction of antennas. Lastly, a preliminary investigation is carried out on the use of different superconductors as probes for the spin polarization for ‘Spintronix’ devices.
