LNL: MICHEL LETOURNEL, INDUSTRIAL ELECTROSTATIC ACCELERATORS. POTENTIALITIES FOR RESEARCH!
LABORATORI NAZIONALI DI LEGNARO
Many different particle accelerators have been used in the laboratories for Nuclear Physics but also for some applications. Generally in laboratories we are not familiar with the applications of direct electrons or X-Rays, neither with the industrial accelerators themselves. First made at High Voltage Engineering Corporation (USA), developments of the electron electrostatic accelerators have been continued at VIVIRAD particularly with the Insulated Core Transformer (ICT) and recently with a new high voltage generator. There is now quite a large range of machines, for industrial applications of course, but it opens also potentialities for other applications or research. Actually, more than 80 % of the industrial electron accelerators in the world are electrostatic machines due mainly to their power, their simplicity and reliability. Through direct electrons of X-Ray conversion, numerous fields of industry benefit from the electron treatment at various energies and powers. A quick survey of some applications will be presented in the cross-linking field and for pollution control; power of the order of the MW (5 MeV – 200 mA) and different voltages are possible. The associated power supplies of these accelerators as well as the HV insulated transformers are also now considered for some applications in research. Already, free electron laser or detection for explosives are among the applications. Particularly could be also contemplated.
