LNL: BIJAYA KUMAR SAHOO, PARITY VIOLATION IN ATOMS AND IONS AS A TEST OF THE STANDARD MODEL
LABORATORI NAZIONALI DI LEGNARO
Despite the remarkable success of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, it is widely believed that it is not the ultimate theory of matter. It is possible to test the SM by combining the results of high precision atomic parity nonconservation (PNC) measurements and sophisticated relativistic many-body calculations. The most accurate data on atomic PNC currently available is for cesium (Cs), but it would be desirable to consider other candidates. We have recently carried out accurate calculations of PNC in Ba+ and related properties using the relativistic coupled-cluster theory. In this talk the importance of these results in testing the SM will be discussed.
