LNL: PIERRE SéGUR, NUMERICAL MODELLING OF THE TRANSPORT OF ELECTRONS AND IONS IN CYLINDRICAL PROPORTIONAL COUNTERS
LABORATORI NAZIONALI DI LEGNARO
The objective of this talk is to give a survey of the different techniques developed in LAPLACE laboratory to study the transport of electrons and ions in cylindrical proportional conters. According to the size and the gas pressure of the investigated proportional counters, the techniques employed are very different. However, in most case, as the avalanche statistics has to be considered, the Monte Carlo method must be used. In this talk, we will review, the different Monte Carlo methods developed in our laboratory which were applied to the determination of electron transport for different type of proportional counters. We will detais, using this technique, the calculation of the response of a proportional counter to the crossing of incoming radiations. Finally we will show the recent development made in the field of numerical modelling of gas discharges and which can be applied to a general geometry when the space charge field generated by charged particle become important.
