Xenon is an interesting material for gamma ray detection and spectrometry. Due to its large atomic number (54), xenon has a large cross section for gamma rays. In liquid phase, it has a density of aubout 3 g/cm3, and therefore a fairly large stopping power. Moreover, xenon is both a good scintillator and a good ionization medium. As a new development, I will present a high pressure xenon used as a scintillator for gamma ray detection and spectroscopy, which has been studied in the context of the MODES-SNM project for Homeland Security, as a component for a Portable Radiation Scanner (RPS).
