LNL: VINCENZO NASSISI, HIGHLY COLLIMATED ION BEAMS GENERATED BY THE PLATONE DOUBLE STAGE ACCELERATOR
LABORATORI NAZIONALI DI LEGNARO
Charged particle beams have an increasingly important role in many scientific applications. In order to manipulate and optimize the beam, we developed a Laser – Ion Source (LIS) with a pulsed KrF excimer laser in the UV range to generate a copper and a yttrium particle beam. After a double post acceleration obtained by high – voltage power supplies, ensuring an high intensity beam with a Maxwell – Boltzmann energy distribution, we performed a study of the geometric quality of the beam by emittance measurement. The anode configuration has been changed to choose the best setup in order to get the best compromise amongst the efficiency of extraction and the geometric quality of the beams. The experimental results have been compared with a simulation study of the same system. Such a post - accelerating system results in a good method to obtain high ion currents by an inexpensive system and the final ion beams find interesting applications in the field of the ion implantations, scientific applications and industrial use.
