LNS: DIPOLE POLARIZABILITY IN THE SCATTERING OF HALO NUCLEI.
LABORATORI NAZIONALI DEL SUD Prof. Joaquin Gomez-Camacho (Università di Siviglia) - Dipole Polarizability in the scattering of halo nuclei.
Abstract
Halo nuclei are composed of a compact core, and one or two weakly bound neutrons. Halo nuclei are unique, in the sense that they can be easily distorted in the presence of a strong coulomb field.
Experimentally, the strong coulomb field can be provided by a heavy target, from which the halo nuclei is scattered. The effect of the dipole polarizability is manifested in the fact that the pattern of elastic scattering deviates strongly from the Rutherford cross section, expected from all nuclear scattering at energies below the Coulomb barrier. Also, a high yield of break-up fragments is produced, due to the fact that the coulomb force pulls apart the charged core form the uncharged neutrons.
The experiments to measure scattering of halo nuclei require a radioactive beam facility (Such as TRIUMF or ISOLDE), and also a special experimental setup, which compensates from the very low beam intensities of halo nuclei. The theoretical interpretation of these experiments require state of the art calculations, which take explicitly into account coulomb and nuclear coupling to the continuum states.
In this talk, recent experiments of 6He, 11Li and 11Be will be presented, along with the theoretical calculations. Applications of the results for the structure of halo nuclei and astrophysically relevant cross sections will be discussed.
